Topic selection

Your first step in research is to choose a topic. You should be aware that choosing a topic is not an easy task . It should be narrow enough to be informative and interesting while broad enough so that you can find the right information.

1 Research tip. Choose a topic of interest to you. This topic will guide you for several weeks as it guides your research, reading, and writing. It is important to choose something that you are interested in and can get excited about. Your presentation or writing will reflect your attitude about the topic.

Brainstorming is a method that you can use to help generate ideas. Below are resources and exercises to help you brainstorm ideas.

The following questions can help you brainstorm topic ideas:

Are you strongly influenced by current social and political debates?
Did you just read or see something in the news that you were interested in?
Do you have an interest, problem or personal issue that you want to be more informed about?
Is there something you’d like to know more about in one of your classes?
